Take a trip back in time and learn about gold mining in the 1880's, hear
about the Bermagui Mystery and enjoy the beautiful bushland setting

The Montreal Goldfield is a unique heritage site: it is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea.
It is an excellent reminder of the gold rush days of the early 1880s.

A section of the original goldfield has been preserved and secured for safe public access. Its vertical shafts
have been made safe to allow easy viewing to the bottom. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors
to wander through the beautiful forest which has re-grown since the moonscape days of the goldrush period.
The miners in their frenzy for profit laid the area bare. Visitors will wonder at the regeneration which includes
tree ferns, orchids and other members of a coastal plant community. Fauna includes sugar gliders, bats,
possums, lizards and a diverse bird life.

Admission is by guided tour only.

This is to satisfy insurance requirements and to ensure that the guides can tell the full Montreal story: a story of
history, mystery and fascinating anecdotes of times gone by.

The track itself is approximately 250 m long with wheelchair access for 60% of it and with many restful benches strategically located. The tour itself takes about 1¼ hours and toilet facilities are available.
